Climate Change Denialism lives on

We’ve previously written about the insanity of climate change denialism (as opposed to healthy scientific rigour.

You might think this sounds rather boring, Snowboard/Ski-person, but, this prevailing attitude affects you in a profound way. Not just in your ability to pursue your snow addiction, but in your ability to access affordable food and clean water.

Stating the Obvious – watching whales is better than killing them

WATCHING whales is far more profitable than eating them, concludes a report published last week by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). It found that revenues from whale watching in 2008 reached $2.1 billion – double the amount earned a decade ago.

The food chain

The food chain: WTF has it got to do with snowboarding, you’re wondering?

Nothing, and everything (think about it).

Commercial Whaling: still banned (for now).

Thanks for checking back, we really appreciate it.Whales might have a chance.
Go support Sea Shepherd, now.

Dear Senator Fielding: You are a Moron

Warning: I am getting angry. Politicians, well, largely are dimwitted. Senator Steve Fielding from the Australia Federal Senate is a complete and utter f$ckwit. Elected on a percentage of around 1.8% of the state senate vote (due to the Senate voting algorithm for Australia), he represents neither a majority nor commonsense. Representative of the religious right (Family First) he exhibits all the pre-Copernican traits of a cave-man. And that’s being nice.

Global Warming denialism: yep, it’s still retarded

Skeptical Science has been a bit quiet lately, probably stalking their prey like a ninja, looking for their mark.

I’ve previously talked about the ridiculousness of ideological, or non-science based denialism (as opposed to scientifically rigorous debate)…

Call me stupid

Now, I might be a bit simple (I’m not), but if nearly all of my doctors (those who are not crackpots at least) was telling me I was going to lose my legs, would I be investing in running shoes?

NEIN! I hear you say. Smart reader!

Similarly, if lots and lots of really clever scientists were telling me the world was getting really, really warm and it was

Why snow guns are bad, and global water shortage = water wars?

One of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard from a skier or boarder (or anyone in ski resort management) is: “I/we don’t care about global warming or less snow, we can use snow guns”.

Well, no, not really. Warmer temps, and/or less precipitation, equals either more rain, or less snow and rain, so either way, snow guns are pretty useless.

Climate Wars: Denialism Vs Science

Yes. We believe that climate change (with resultant warming) is occuring.
Yes, the planet has warmed and cooled of it’s own accord.

But never this fast.

Why are we still debating this I wonder? Because the debate is getting in the way of action.

Saving wolves, bears (and our souls): why conservation matters pt II

I like to think snowboarders are in general pretty soulful beings; after all, we enjoy the outdoors and most of us can appreciate the beauty in the outdoors; for instance as we stand at the top of a snowy peak.

I also like to think generally we care about animals. I know I do – to the point I don’t eat them (but that’s a different matter). All of which makes the following information really, really, well, just saddening.
