Is climate change adaptation expensive?
Thanks for checking back, we really appreciate it.
Well, in short, yes. But what’s the alternative? And relative to what?
One of the great denialist and big business (this means you big oil and coal) calls for not doing anything drastic about climate change or obfuscating on climate change is because it will “cost jobs” and cost money. These guys are clowns. No planet = no companies = no jobs.
I would argue the cost of doing nothing, and seeing our planet screwed, is way way higher than doing something now. Which risk would you rather take?
Here is a great article on how the denialists prevent traction on action, and also on why it won’t be expensive. I highly recommend reading it.
It says:
The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change, an influential but controversial 2006 report for the British government, concluded that climate action would cost 1 percent of global GDP (though Stern now warns that our failure to act is raising the price tag) and that inaction could reduce global GDP by up to 20 percent.
Think about that for a second. Australia’s recent GDP for the last quarter was confirmed at minus 0.5%. Half of 1%. Now imagine, if you will, if that was 5%. For one quarter. Every quarter. Imagine what that would do for jobs. You can kiss your economy goodbye. Poverty, famine, crime, murder, suicide. Sounds delightful! Oh wait, it doesn’t.
Anyway, I don’t see cost, I see endless opportunity! How about these guys? What about all the geothermal, wind and wave tech companies? What about Google? They’re doing a lot of good work – jobs! Even the US military is working out ways to save a load of money and help the environment. Wait, what’s that? They’re saving money and their carbon footprint? What? That’s not what big business is saying will happen, is it?
If we don’t act now, we’re going to lose species (wholesale), wreck the planet, and leave a MASSIVE bill for our kids and grandkids to clean it up (if they’re even alive). Hmm, hardly seems fair.
What is going on here? Hmm. I smell a rat! A lot of them. Big oily, coal-dust coloured ones. Begone, vile ravens of destruction.
The time for change has come. Go away, we don’t want you anymore.
